Nothing says spring quite like a lilac bloom and in SF they are seldom seen, since we do not get enough chill each year. I maneuvered around that problem by buying a cultivar that was developed at Descanso Gardens in Southern California, specifically for our temperate weather. Even so, it did not bloom for many years until last year. I pruned it slightly to see if I was "getting it right" and it seemed to have worked. This year I think I'll give it a full pruning and hope that works as well as last year's timid step, only better. Since it blooms on "new wood" I shouldn't worry about overdoing. As long as I make sure to prune a 1/4" above buds facing outward, it will be fine.
